GOOD TO KNOW

Balwarren Bed & Breakfast accommodation offers the visitor a unique experience.  Winner of Alistair Sawdays 'Special places to stay' best breakfast award. This lovely converted cottage offers superb, extremely comfortable, accommodation in beautiful surroundings.
Set in the beautiful rural landscape of Ordiquhill, on the North East Coast of Aberdeenshire, this secluded working croft is a very special hideaway. Balwarren is situated in rural Aberdeenshire.  Five miles from the coast.  The croft is secluded and peaceful, situated as it is up a half mile farm track.  There are 10 golf courses within easy driving distance.   Close to the Whisky and Castle trails and the beautiful old harbours of Portsoy, Whitehills, Cullen and Portknockie.  Stunning sandy beaches at Cullen and Banff.

Referred to in the guests visitors book as a 'hidden gem'.

Balwarren Bed & Breakfast  offers one twin and one double room both are en-suite.

The beds are new with quality mattresses and crisp bedding. A television is supplied in both bedrooms.

There is a dining area and separate sitting room for guests.  There is a separate sunny sitting area with tea and coffee facilities and access to WiFi.

Balwarren has a separate dining room with a feature stone wall and wood burner set into the original ingle nook.

The superb and very welcoming sitting room has a mini minstrel's gallery, books and cascading plants. So that our guests may relax in peace and comfort after a day of sight-seeing, we have deliberately not included a television in the sitting room.

Balwarren is a 30 acre working croft and has been owned by James and Hazel for the last thirty years. The original cottage dating back to the 18 century.  Once a small, heather thatched 'but and ben' the house has been tastefully renovated and extended.

Careful attention to detail has created a high quality Bed & Breakfast where comfort and a flair for the old and interesting blend to delight the guests.

James manages the croft in his spare time with reluctant help from Hazel who has a lifelong interest in herbs. The garden is her area of interest, expertise and joy. The herb garden is in the process of being moved to a new site.

A self taught cook, Hazel loves to use fresh herbs from the herb garden to create dishes to give satisfaction to the most discerning of guests at Balwarren Bed & Breakfast. She also makes her own jams, chutney, marmalade and bread for you to enjoy.

Both James and Hazel are interested in green issues and run the croft and  Bed & Breakfast on chemical-free principles. All ingredients are locally sourced and organic where possible.

There is a small herd of pedigree highland cattle on the croft, a small number of hens and some bee hives.   There is woodland walk, and pond.   The croft has deer, badgers, pheasants, kestrels, owls, pine  martins to name but a few of the interesting wildlife species that abound.
